uPVC Door Lock Mechanism Repair

Behind the strip of metal on the edge of a UPVC or composite door sits a multipoint mechanism: a central gearbox driven by the handle, connected to hooks, rollers, deadbolts and latches along the door edge. Lifting the handle drives those points out into the keeps in the frame; turning the key then locks the gearbox so the handle cannot be dropped again.

Two separate things can therefore fail. The gearbox — the mechanical heart — wears or shears internally, which is why the handle can lift but the key will not turn, or the handle goes completely slack. Or the door alignment fails, so the hooks and rollers no longer meet their keeps and the door has to be lifted, shoved or slammed to lock.

Handle lifts normally, key will not turn: gearbox failure, almost certainly. Handle will not lift at all with the door open: the gearbox has jammed internally. Handle will not lift with the door closed but lifts fine when open: alignment, not the gearbox — the hooks are hitting the keeps. Handle flops with no resistance: broken spindle, handle spring or gearbox cam.

Door locks but you have to lift very hard: the door has dropped on its hinges and is on borrowed time. Key turns but the door still opens: the hooks are engaging fresh air because the keeps have moved. Telling us which of these you have lets the engineer arrive with the right gearbox and the right expectation.

The gearbox is replaced by removing the handles and the faceplate screws, withdrawing the mechanism from the door edge, matching backset, PZ spacing, handle centres and length, then fitting the new unit and testing through a full cycle. Alignment is corrected at the same time: hinges adjusted or packed, keeps re-positioned, compression set so the door closes with a firm push rather than a heave. That is what makes the repair last, and it is the step a rushed installer skips.

A whole new door is warranted only when the slab itself is damaged, the frame is rotten or distorted beyond adjustment, or the mechanism is an obsolete pattern with no modern equivalent — which is rare. If someone has quoted you four figures for a door because it will not lock, get a second opinion first.

A multipoint gearbox replacement typically runs £179–£229 fully fitted, including the part, labour and the alignment work. A handle set is around £69–£89 fitted. A euro cylinder is around £99 fitted like-for-like, or £119–£139 for a TS007 3-star anti-snap upgrade — worth doing at the same time, because a UPVC door with a basic cylinder is the classic snapping target.

Everything is quoted as a fixed total before the engineer travels, at the same price at night and at weekends. Most repairs are completed in one visit, within an hour to ninety minutes of arriving.
