TS007 3-Star Cylinders — The Only Spec That Defeats Lock Snapping

2026-05-17 3 min read

Lock snapping is the most common method of forced entry into UK UPVC and composite doors. A burglar grips the protruding euro cylinder with mole grips, applies leverage along its weakest cross-section, and the cylinder snaps cleanly in two — exposing the internal cam that operates the multipoint lock. The whole attack takes 30–60 seconds, requires no lock-picking skill, and leaves the door operable from the now-exposed cam. The defence is a TS007 3-star (or Sold Secure Diamond) anti-snap euro cylinder.

What TS007 actually tests. The TS007 standard (published by the Door and Hardware Federation) tests euro cylinders against snapping, drilling, picking and bumping attacks. Cylinders earn 1, 2 or 3 stars depending on how comprehensively they resist these attacks for the specified time periods. Only 3-star cylinders are considered fully snap-resistant — 1-star and 2-star ratings can be combined with separately rated handle plates (TS007 'star system') to achieve equivalent protection, but a 3-star cylinder is the simplest, most reliable upgrade.

How a 3-star cylinder defeats snapping. Modern anti-snap cylinders use one or more of three design tricks: sacrificial sections that snap cleanly without exposing the cam; reinforced internal cores that simply resist snapping forces; or 'lockdown' mechanisms (like Brisant Ultion's central pin) that activate under attack and lock the cylinder against further manipulation. All three approaches defeat the snap attack in field testing.

Which brands meet the spec. All are van stock for a reputable locksmith and all defeat snapping in our field experience.

How to check what you have. Open your front door and look at the cylinder edge where the key goes in. Modern anti-snap cylinders often have a logo or marking on the face (Ultion's 'U' logo, ABS's brand stamp, Yale's '3*' marking). If there's no logo and the cylinder looks like a basic brass barrel, it's almost certainly not anti-snap. Also check protrusion: a cylinder that sticks out more than 5mm from the handle plate is highly snap-attackable regardless of rating.

Sizing the cylinder correctly. Euro cylinders are sized in 5mm increments (35/35, 40/40, 45/45, 35/40, 40/45 etc.) — the two numbers refer to the internal and external lengths from the central cam. The cylinder should sit flush or near-flush on both sides of the door; protrusion of more than 5mm is a snap target regardless of the cylinder's TS007 rating. A working locksmith will measure your door and supply the correct size.

What it costs to upgrade. The fitting takes 10–15 minutes per cylinder. Most upgrades are completed in a single visit with no door damage.

Keyed-alike suites. If you have multiple external doors with euro cylinders (front, back, French doors, side door), all can be supplied keyed alike so a single key opens every door. We supply keyed-alike Ultion, ABS and Mul-T-Lock suites weekly across West London and the Thames Valley.

Worth it? Almost always yes. Lock snapping is the entry method of choice for opportunistic UPVC burglaries because it's fast, quiet and requires no skill. Upgrading to TS007 3-star removes the attack vector entirely.
