Anti-Snap Locks: Ultion vs Avocet ABS vs Yale Platinum (2026 Comparison)
Lock snapping is the single most common method of forced entry into UPVC and composite doors in the UK. A burglar grips the protruding euro cylinder with mole grips, applies leverage until the cylinder snaps along its weakest cross-section, and the cam is exposed. The whole attack takes under 60 seconds and requires no skill. The defence is straightforward: a TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond anti-snap cylinder. The question is which one.
We fit thousands of anti-snap cylinders a year across West London and the Thames Valley. Three brands account for over 90% of what we fit: Brisant Ultion, Avocet ABS and Yale Platinum 3-star. Here's how they actually compare in the field, not in a marketing brochure.
Brisant Ultion. Probably the best-known UK anti-snap cylinder. TS007 3-star and Sold Secure Diamond rated, with the famous 'Lock Down Mode' — if attacked, an internal pin engages and the cylinder becomes effectively unbreakable. Best for: homeowners who want strong consumer-facing branding and the security blanket of the guarantee.
Avocet ABS. Quieter brand, equally serious hardware. TS007 3-star, Sold Secure Diamond, with multiple sacrificial sections so a snap attack only removes a stub rather than exposing the cam. Key control is excellent — keys can only be cut on presentation of a security card. Best for: homeowners who prioritise key control (no copies cut without permission) and prefer engineering credentials over marketing.
Yale Platinum 3-star. Yale's flagship TS007 3-star cylinder. Solid engineering, widely stocked, Yale brand recognition. Less aggressive marketing than Ultion, less restricted than ABS. Best for: homeowners who want a known brand at a slightly lower price point, or where the door already runs other Yale hardware (keyed-alike possibilities).
What's the same. All three meet TS007 3-star, all three meet Sold Secure Diamond, all three defeat snapping, bumping, picking and drilling attacks. All three will satisfy any UK home insurer's requirement for 'anti-snap' or 'high-security' euro cylinders.
What's different. Key control: ABS is strictest (security card required for copies). Guarantee: Ultion has the highest-profile consumer guarantee. Price: Yale Platinum is typically the cheapest, Ultion the most expensive. Availability of registered key cutting: ABS keys must be cut at authorised centres, which is a security feature but slightly inconvenient.
Our default recommendation. For most West London / Thames Valley front doors, we fit Avocet ABS — the combination of engineering, key control and price is hard to beat. For homeowners who want the maximum brand-name security blanket, Ultion. For budget-conscious upgrades, Yale Platinum. All three are head-and-shoulders better than a standard non-anti-snap cylinder, which can be defeated in seconds.
Important: fitting matters as much as the cylinder. An ABS 3-star fitted with the wrong length so it protrudes 8mm from the handle plate is still snap-attackable from that exposed portion. A 5mm or less protrusion is the target. Any working locksmith will measure your door and size the cylinder correctly — it should be flush or near-flush on both faces.
