Locked Your Keys Inside the House? What To Do (and What NOT To Do)

2026-02-18 3 min read

It's a horrible feeling — you've shut the door, you can see the keys on the kitchen worktop, and you're standing on the doorstep in your slippers. Before you do anything else, take a breath. House lockouts are one of the most common emergency call-outs in the UK and they're almost always resolved without damage to the door or the lock.

What to try first. Walk around the property and check every door and openable window. The back door, side gate, garage side door, conservatory door, downstairs cloakroom window — one of them is unlocked surprisingly often. If you have a spouse, partner, parent, neighbour or letting agent with a spare key, this is the moment to call them.

What NOT to do. Don't try to force the door — you'll damage the frame, the gearbox or the cylinder, and the repair bill will run into the hundreds. Don't try to push or shimmy the lock with a credit card unless you genuinely know what you're doing — modern UPVC and composite doors have deadlocking hooks that can't be bypassed this way.

When to call a locksmith. If no one with a spare can attend within an hour, calling a locksmith is the sensible move — especially at night, with children involved, or in cold weather.

What an honest locksmith will do on arrival. First, verify you live there — photo ID matching the address, a recent utility bill, a phone call to the landlord or managing agent. This protects you as much as them. Second, attempt non-destructive entry: picking, bumping or bypass tools work on over 95% of UK residential locks. Third, only if non-destructive methods genuinely fail, drill the cylinder — but with your explicit consent and a quote for the replacement cylinder agreed in advance.

Red flags. A locksmith who shows up and immediately reaches for the drill is a rogue trader. A locksmith who refuses to give you a fixed total before starting work is a rogue trader. If any of these happen, stop the work, refuse to pay, and call a different locksmith — and the police if you feel intimidated.

Prevention. Modern smart locks (Yale Conexis, Ultion Nuki) let you unlock by phone — but check insurer compliance before fitting. Giving a spare to a trusted neighbour is free and works at 3am. Most lockouts are entirely preventable.
