Emergency Locksmith Costs at Night in London — What's Fair in 2026
If you're searching for an emergency locksmith at 2am, you're not in a position to shop around. Rogue traders know this and price accordingly — which is why the British locksmith trade has a reputation it doesn't entirely deserve. Here's what fair night-time pricing actually looks like in London and the Home Counties in 2026.
Standard non-destructive lockout entry.
Lock change after lockout (cylinder snapped or lost keys). The unlock itself is the same price as above.
UPVC gearbox replacement in an emergency.
Burglary repair. Lock and door replacement after a forced entry: highly variable, but a fair locksmith provides a written quote and itemised invoice that your insurer will accept.
What you should always be quoted. Total fixed price (parts + labour + travel + VAT, no asterisks). Engineer's name. ETA. Whether non-destructive entry will be attempted first (the answer should be yes). What happens if the lock has to be drilled — what the replacement cylinder costs, and your right to refuse drilling.
Red flags.
Why honest locksmiths can quote on the phone. Every common job — lockout, cylinder change, gearbox replacement, mortice lock fitting — has a known parts cost and a known labour time. A working locksmith has fitted thousands of each. There's no legitimate reason to refuse a fixed quote before setting off; the only reason a trader would refuse is because they're planning to inflate the bill on the doorstep.
The MLA test. The Master Locksmiths Association is the UK trade body — its members are vetted, DBS-checked, insured and follow a published code of conduct that includes fixed-price quoting. The MLA website has a 'find a locksmith' search; using it eliminates virtually all rogue traders. The MLA isn't perfect (membership is voluntary and some excellent independents aren't members) but it's the best single filter UK consumers have.
Fixed pricing isn't a marketing gimmick — it's how the trade keeps itself honest. If a locksmith refuses to give you one before setting off, hang up and call the next.
